The patient was admitted to a Thessaloniki hospital for a colon operation. Ten days later, he developed a high fever, severe shortness of breath and pain. He was given strong painkillers and other medication before doctors decided he needed a second operation by the same surgical team. His condition, however, deteriorated again. Subsequent tests revealed severe sepsis.
