In 480 BC, the Athenians faced the end of the world as they knew it. Seeking a way to deal with the impending Persian invasion, they sought refuge in the oracle of Delphi. After foretelling the impending disaster, Pythia left them with a glimmer of hope: “A wall of wood alone shall be uncaptured, a boon to you and your children.”
