In a 1970 BBC documentary, filmed a few years before Franco’s death, a young Spanish student speaks almost without emotion, his back turned to the camera: “What the regime is trying to say is that Spain is simply experiencing ‘student unrest,’ just like any other civilized Western country. That, of course, is not true. I would compare it to Greece: We are both fighting for basic freedoms – freedom of expression, freedom to vote, freedom of association.”
