Withdrawing 2011 referendum idea was ‘best possible decision,’ says Merkel

George Papandreou’s move to withdraw a proposal to hold a referendum in 2011 during the country’s financial crisis was “the best possible decision” as the European Union “would not have known how to deal with a Greek exit” from the eurozone, former German chancellor Angela Merkel has said.
